Lectures

The White Rose in Their Own Words | This lecture introduces the group through their own words, using excerpts from their letters and diaries in a new English translation by student members of the White Rose Project. These texts, the majority of which have never appeared in English, speak movingly of courage and conscience.

Defying Hitler: The White Rose Resistance Group | In June 2019, Dr Alex Lloyd gave a lecture in the Weston Library on the White Rose, examining how the group used the written word to inspire resistance. View it online here.

BBC Radio 4’s The World Tonight | On Friday 21 February Dr Alex Lloyd was interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s The World Tonight. She spoke about the White Rose group and the project’s collaboration with SANSARA which took place on 22 February, the 77th anniversary of the first White Rose trials and executions. One of the White Rose group’s letters from prison was also read out, in the new English translation by student members of the White Rose Project. Music from SANSARA’s first cd, The Cloths of Heaven, played in the background. You can listen again to the programme here (starts at 38:12). It was so moving to hear a text that we here at the Project had worked on, and that was written by a young person of such courage and conviction.

Voices of the Resistance – Sophie SchollHere you can listen to some excerpts from Sophie Scholl’s letters in English, read by Elba Slamecka, a student member of the White Rose Project. These texts were translated by student members of the White Rose Project.
