CONCERT: Voices of the German Resistance

We are delighted to announce ‘Voices of the German Resistance’, a concert devised in collaboration with the award-winning vocal ensemble SANSARA.

Saturday 22 February 2020, 7.30pm
University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford

I will set off for home in a fortnight. I have realised that there is nothing more important than seeing you now. It’s only 80 metres from our trench to the Russians. And yet our existence here is more peaceful than ever.  If the noise doesn’t bother you, that is. (Letter from Hans Scholl to his family, October 1942, at the Russian front.)

In 1943 five students and a professor at the University of Munich were arrested, tried, and executed. They were members of The White Rose (‘Die Weiße Rose’), a clandestine group who wrote and distributed leaflets calling on Germans to resist Hitler. Award-winning vocal ensemble SANSARA performs ancient and modern choral works alongside readings from the White Rose resistance group’s letters and diaries. The majority of these texts have never appeared in English and speak movingly of courage and conscience. The programme includes

Philip Moore, Three Prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
1. Morning prayers
2. Prayers in the time of distress
3. Evening Prayers
Rudolf Mauersberger, Wie liegt die Stadt so wüst
Arvo Pärt, Da pacem Domine

This event is a collaboration between the White Rose Project and SANSARA and forms part of the Humanities Cultural Programme. Tickets: £15/£5 (students and under 18s), available from ticketsoxford.com | 01865 305 305. Duration: 2 hours with interval.
